Dear Diary
Today was one of the strangest and silliest days in Whispering Woods! I was invited to join a “gurning” contest, which, as it turns out, is a competition where you make the ugliest, silliest, or scariest face possible while sticking your head through a horse collar! I’d never heard of such a thing before, but Ollie the Owl explained it’s something humans do. He had to be the one to convince us animals to try it, saying it was “for a good cause.” Of course, Rocky Raccoon couldn’t resist signing up right away, and soon Bumbles the Bear, Baxter the Beaver, and even Walter the Woodpecker threw their names into the mix!
I was so excited to be part of something so fun and ridiculous! At first, it was all laughs. Rocky’s face twisted up in ways I didn’t think were possible, and Baxter looked like he was chewing on a tree while rolling his eyes in two different directions! Bumbles, though—oh, Bumbles’ face was the scariest of all! His wide, goofy grin turned into a nightmarish grimace, and when he accidentally let out a growl at the same time, it sent a shiver down my spine! Even Walter, who’s usually so busy pecking at trees, managed to make a truly terrifying scowl. The crowd’s laughter quickly turned to nervous murmurs as each face got scarier and scarier.
By the end of the contest, everyone—contestants and audience alike—was so jittery and scared that they couldn’t bear to stay any longer. People started slipping away one by one until, suddenly, the entire audience had vanished! No one wanted to look at the contestants’ twisted faces any longer, and in the end, no winner was announced. Ollie the Owl was left scratching his head, still trying to figure out what went wrong. As for me, I’m not sure if I’m relieved or disappointed! One thing’s for sure, though: it’ll be a long time before Whispering Woods has another gurning contest!
